Top 10 Best Board Games For Halloween - Off Your Radar
Hello My Fellow Spooksters!
If you’re here then that must mean you love Halloween, which is great because I love it too!
I’ve seen a lot of lists circulating the spider’s interweb and many lists recommend the same games.
I wanted to do something different and actually recommend really amazing games that maybe you’ve never heard before!
I’ll go ahead and admit,, there’s certainly a couple that you’ve likely heard of before, but I can nearly guarantee that you’ll find some surprises here as well!
Without further ado, here’s our list (in no particular order).
10. Witch Slapped!
A fun and spooky competitive game where players play as witches with different specialties and powers. The game is an interesting take on the classic game of Spoons, which works even if you have never played Spoons before!
Pros: Affordable, easy once you get the hang of it, family fun.
Cons: Can be tricky to learn.
9. Zombie Fluxx
Fluxx comes in all types of varients, including one for zombies which is perfect for a spooky night’s fun!
Pros: Affordable, easy to play, family fun, anyone can win.
Cons: A very random game.
8. King of Tokyo
Bonus points if you’re playing with the Halloween expansions or with the limited Dark Edition. King of Tokyo is a real crowd pleaser because of the large standees, thematic gameplay, and ease of play.
Pros: Easy to play, family fun.
Cons: It’s not “super strategy” oriented, but it takes a very special kind of group for this game not to work.
7. Dead of Winter
A zombie survival board game which takes place in the… you guessed it, in the dead of winter! This game offers a ton of hours of fun!
Pros: Thematic, story elements, hours of fun, interesting encounters and decisions.
Cons: The game takes hours to play (especially on first playthrough, which can be a positive or negative).
6. Legendaria
Alright, so while it’s not quite a board game, it’s a tabletop RPG which can be played from your phone. Legendaria is totally worth playing, especially for Halloween as it gives you access to amazing legends such as the Headless Horseman, Cerberus, Rasputin, Muramasa, and other villainous foes!
One of the expansions, Welcome to Salem, takes place during the Salem Witch Trials and drops players in the midst of the conflict, allowing them to choose whichever side they want, having players experience endlessly replayable fun!
Pros: Affordable, Welcome to Salem scenario and others are already written for the game, over 100 playable characters.
Cons: Rules can be hard to understand at first. Adventures have to have a Game Master to run the game.
5. Campy Creatures
Only if you’re new hear would you not have heard about Campy Creatures because we rave about this game all the time. It’s simple, fun, and perfect for Halloween.
Pros: Affordable, fun, easy to learn and play. Family friendly.
Cons: The 1st edition is our favorite version but impossible to find. The 2nd edition offers more options which could be a bonus for more hardcore board gamers, while detracting some for more casual gamers.
4. Bloodborne Card Game
A semi-cooperative, competitive game which takes place in the Bloodborne video game intellectual property.
Pros: You don’t have to be familiar with the video game to enjoy this game. No elimination. Interesting game play loops. Strategy heavy.
Cons: Game should be played with 3-5 players, which can be a hard number for some groups to fit.
3. GROWL
Many people will recommend One Night: Ultimate Werewolf, but we’re going to recommend a different take on the popular game, and that’s GROWL!
GROWL is a card game variant where players will use cards in their hand to deal out “bites” and “wounds,” trying to survive each night.
Pros: Affordable, easy to play, eyes don’t need to be closed like in similar games (which leads to cheating or accidentally discoveries such as you hearing the player to your left moving).
Cons: The game has a higher learning curve and longer setup time than your typical Werewolf game (though only by a little bit, we still recommend this game over the others!)
2. Heads or Tails: The Monster Dating Game
Not many people know of this game, but it rocks. It’s my fiancées current favorite game and for good reason! I introduced my family to this the other week and my family has been clamoring to play it again and show it to other family members!
Pros: Easy to learn, great for parties, roleplay elements, you’ll laugh more playing this game than any other.
Cons: There’s not much artwork in the game.
1. Ghoullotine
This card game is the epitome of Halloween goodness! Players will try and “battle it out” by pushing their luck to get as close to “13” without going over. The game features fan favorite monsters such as frankensteins, vampires, witches, and skeletons, as well as stranger creatures, such as the wendigo!
Pros: Affordable, easy to learn, family friendly, quick.
Cons: The game is currently only for pre-order. The game is really quick, so it’s not good to fill entire game night for hours on its own.
