Want A Great Game? Don't Do This!

The world is littered with bad advice and the world of game design is no different.
Don’t mistake games funded by the those who are more fortunate and wealthy with being a good game (it could still be a great game, just saying there’s some really polished turds out there).

So, let’s dive in!

I’ve seen some ideas floating around the internet saying, “my game will be improved once I get some art for it!” and while that’s certainly true, people rush this process and are looking at from the wrong angle.

You want to get great artwork for your great game, not get great artwork for your mediocre game.

If your game isn’t GREAT when simply playing with crap art or NO art then it’s not worth it.

A game shouldn’t need artwork to be fun, engaging, and a blast to play! Playtesters should ask to continue playing regardless of if it has art or not.

For example, when I showed my game, Ghoullotine off, I was having multiple playtesters asking me for the card details so they could write down the information on index cards to play at home.

If you feel like needing great artwork will “save your game” from being bad then you’re dead wrong.

You still may however do well, because you, we as humans are attracted to what looks nice. I’d just personally prefer to put out games with great game design, maybe that’s just me though.

Stay awesome!
