The Truth Behind The New BGG Logo

Look, a lot of people have formed strong opinions on the new Board Game Geek logo and I can’t blame them! The change is fairly drastic and bold!

I’m a little late in offering up my opinion into the arena. As a professional graphic designer myself, in my personal opinion, this logo does a lot of things right, but it also ultimately is terrible.

It’s straight garbage.

Okay, that’s a bit harsh. I don’t actually think it’s garbage.

I actually like a few things about it.
1. A more simplistic logo is better for instant recognition and communication
2. A more simplistic logo is easier to use with marketing materials.

And both those points are true, however, the problem is the logo is too abstract to instantly identify. I believe it’s meant to be the silhouette of the character from the previous logo. The thing is, it’s not entirely clear. Also, it looks like a weird Gatorade re-branding.

That’s my just my thoughts though. What’s yours? Let me know in the comments below!
