Hold Onto Your Biscuits! We've Got A Fascinating Interview!
So, if you’ve been unfortunate to not come across this delight of a game, Biscuit TCG is a trading card game set in a dystopian future with humor being a primary theme running throughout it.
As an avid fan of cartoons and some silly themes, Biscuit seems like a game right up my alley, so I wanted to interview the creator of this fun looking card game to see what it was all about!
Vindicated Entertainment: So! For those who haven't heard of you, introduce yourself and what people should know about you.
Bob Thrasher: Sure! My name’s Bob Thrasher. I’m a graphic designer/illustrator with a passion for trading card games and character design.
Awesome! So, do you create the graphic designs and illustrations we see with the Biscuit TCG?
Yes I do! I’m responsible for most facets of Biscuit TCG. Just recently I brought on a friend to review, play test, and help with game mechanics. I started out my journey in indie games really knowing nothing about creating games. I was just an artist who wanted to make cards. I’ve learned a LOT since the beginning.
That's great! I'm sure bringing a friend on has helped! So, it seems Biscuit Is your “main child” when it comes to your game design projects? What was the inspiration for the name and why should people give the game a try?
For right now, Biscuit is my only published game. I have been able to throw so much of my time and passion into it because it’s my main focus. The inspiration for the name is actually a bit goofy. My name’s Bob, and I’ve always enjoyed creatively inserting my name into things. The original name of the game was The Battle of Biscuit, or BoB. After discovering this was an actual historical battle, I shortened it to Biscuit. That’s also the name of the main character.
I think people should give Biscuit a try for a bunch of reasons! If you’re into trading card games and want something fresh, it’s an easy game to get into. Packs are considerably more affordable when compared to big name TCGs, and there’s a lot of cards to collect. My goal with the game was to take things I loved from a bunch of different TCGs and mash them into one, and I think I’ve successfully done that. I also wanted to make a TCG that was a bit more lighthearted and cartoony than Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh.
You might chuckle a couple times during a duel, or at least blow air out your nose. Which is something I’ve never experienced with big name TCGs.
I can definitely relate to throwing all your passion into a project and self inserting your name. I think it's a great way to help tie it into you, which is the heart of the game! I also like how you're goal is to be more affordable and humorous than other TCGs on the market. What would you say are your main inspirations for Biscuit? From both a thematic and mechanical perspective.
I’d say there are tons of inspirations for Biscuit. Thematically and artistically, I like a lot of anime and cartoons. My art probably resembles Rick and Morty the most, and I think that translates in the game. Some of the humor may feel familiar to Justin Roiland fans. Mechanically, my initial inspiration for the game was Yu-Gi-Oh, as I was a huge fan as a kid. As the game developed, I also took inspiration from Magic, Hearthstone, and the Pokémon TCG.
The first pack of Biscuit cards was released for sale on my Etsy in August 2019. I used to print the cards on linen paper and individually cut them. It took forever and to make a profit I had to sell the packs for $30 each. Since then, I found an amazing manufacturer for indie games, The Game Crafter. There are now seven unique packs of 51 cards, each with its own theme and play style. There’s also a giant pack of all 357 cards for half the price of buying all seven packs individually. As far as future releases, there’s a huge 108-card expansion pack in the works which will go for about $20.
That's great and The Game Crafter sounds much more efficient! So, with the seven unique packs you've created, would you say they are all fairly balanced? Any recommendations for beginners looking to give Biscuit a try?
We just released an update to the game, V3, which did a lot towards balancing out each pack. I’d say at this point they can all pretty much put up a good fight. For beginners, I’d recommend either the Demonic Pack or the Imperial Pack. These two are both strong and uncomplicated. The other packs are equally strong, but might require more difficult plays to dominate the duels.
Awesome! So, in Biscuit there seems to be a great variety in what you can play. Do plan to release more packs with different themes or add to existing themes?
I’ll be adding new themes and adding to old themes! The expansion pack I’m working on contains 10 news cards for each theme, and 30 cards for a brand-new theme.
That sounds exciting! So, is there anything else you'd like those reading to know about you or your games before the end of this interview?
I think it’s important people know how passionate I am about this game! I genuinely love it, enjoy playing it, and I will be working to improve and add to it for years to come. I hope you take a chance on it and thank you for giving me the chance to talk all about it
