Yu-Gi-Oh's New Format - Introducing Quin!

Yu-Gi-Oh players from all over the world have been clamoring for a new Yu-Gi-Oh format and I can’t say I blame them.

There’s massive power creep, complicated rules, and TONS OF CARD TEXT.

Our best bet for another format has been Speed Duels, which many people say is dying out and then there’s Rush Duels, which is a separate game with a Yu-Gi-Oh vibe to it.

We need a new format.

So here it is...

Welcome to the Quin Format!

What’s Quin?

Quin is the latest Yu-Gi-Oh format designed to be simple to play, involve classic Yu-Gi-Oh cards for older fans, and evolve as the game continues, without the need of constantly monitoring websites.

This format is a fanmade format created by a professional game designer and someone who grew up playing with the classic Yu-Gi-Oh cards.

The word “Quin” comes from the word “Quintuple” meaning “five.” Yu-Gi-Oh already loves the number five. Five is the number of cards players begin with their opening hand and it’s the standard number of slots for both monsters and spells/traps!

Keeping with the name and theme, we apply it to three easy to follow rules.

The Rules

  • No cards with over 5 lines of text. Materials do not count towards the limit. In the instance of reprints, refer to the latest printing of a card to see if it’s legal.

  • All cards are limited to one. No banned cards (this is subject to change as the format evolves. Many powerful cards are effectively banned due to the first rule. Other power cards are mitigated by this and the final rule.

  • 50 card deck. Having only one copy of each card in a 50 card deck will open up variance, experimental play, and help halt degenerate gameplay.

Being a “classic” Yu-Gi-Oh player, I have a soft spot for the GOAT format and while I love the format and always will, there’s some problems with it. Coincidentally it’s also it’s biggest strength, it’s that every card is “locked” almost like a stasis in time, unyielding and unable to bend, change, or grow in anyway.

I love it for this, but it doesn’t in any way, recreate the discovery that playing Yu-Gi-Oh did back then. Collecting new cards, opening packs, discovering new combos, etc.

The current standard meta of Yu-Gi-Oh has the latter in spades but lacks everything that makes GOAT so much fun. Playing classic cards and having slower, tempo oriented gameplay.

Quin is here to be the bridge between two worlds of Yu-Gi-Oh.

Features

  • Lower barrier to entry.

  • Unique decks.

  • Fresh gameplay.

  • Discover playable cards.

  • No monitoring ban lists.

  • Great format for returning Yu-Gi-Oh players.

  • Play with money great Yu-Gi-Oh cards that are no longer banned.

So what say you?!

If Quin sounds cool to you, be sure to share this with your favorite Yugitubers, friend group, and hop in our gaming discord!

Stay awesome!
Vincent
